A few hours out of Hanoi, Hạ Long bay is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Vietnam. The tourists (us) are ferried around the limestone karst pinnacles, thousands of which spring up from the water in the 1500 odd kilometre area. In between, fisherman navigate their ancient craft and touts paddle little rowboats, offering not-so-cold drinks and snacks. And yes, it really did look like that.
OK, not really. The colours were a little more saturated. But still, it was nice.
We spent two nights on a wooden boat because that’s what you do when you’re at Hạ Long Bay. Apparently they’re considering banning the wooden boats due to risk of fire. Ours remained comfortably unoxidised the entire duration of our visit.
At night we failed to catch squid and so drank beer instead. Inside our room the ship creaked and the geckos squeaked like rats.
